Greenwashing: ESA's Call for Evidence

On 15 November 2022, three European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) consisting of the European Banking Authority (EBA), European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and European Insurance and Occupational Pension Authority (EIOPA) published a Call for Evidence on greenwashing due to the growing demand for sustainability-related products.

This survey aims to collect input from the EU financial sector, including banking, insurance, and financial markets, on greenwashing practices and associated risks that affect the sustainable investment value chain and financial product lifecycle.

A deeper understanding of greenwashing and its associated risks will help improve policymaking and increase trust in sustainability-related products. Greenwashing, as a term, is broadly used in this call and covers all points on the ESG spectrum. The targets are the risks and occurrences in the financial sector that impact the financial products or services under the scope of the ESAs. While sections of the survey are targeted to each ESA separately, there is a section with cross-sectoral greenwashing questions common to all three ESAs.

Participants will be able to submit their responses by 10 January 2023, and the contributions will be inputs for the ESAs’ progress reports due to be published in May 2023 and the final report version in May 2024.
